Some people make the mistake of thinking women are only gatherers … gardeners … that they can only dig and pick and cultivate and hide.

I tell you that women are the strongest, smartest and most dangerous hunters the world has ever seen. Individually, they may be physically overpowered, but in planning, in vision, in purpose and explosive action, they can’t be beat. Any honest man will admit there is nothing that fills them with awe so much as their partner when she has made up her mind.

She has become an unstoppable, indomitable will. If it’s against him, he’d better start running!

War5

There’s a narrative that women are weak, that they’re vulnerable, that they are somehow less intelligent or capable than a man. Well, they said that about serfs, about slaves, about people…

TMNT | XKCD

IMG_3100.PNG
http://xkcd.com/1412/

Monday’s XKCD (above) made me go find the original theme song on YouTube (top).

In the late 80′ – early 90s TMNT were all the rage. The boys were little and between Christmas and birthdays we acquired every form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle paraphernalia know to man. You name it we had it: action figures, weapons, vehicles, home-made VHS recordings of the TV shows, comic books (new and old). The show was on every afternoon after school around dinner time and I watched many an episode with the boys. We also saw the first several movies. The theme song was unquestionably catchy, humor childish but not always so, the plots predictable. But heck, I enjoyed it as much as the boys did.

It was a classic.

Roskilde Festival Radio Nøgenløb

The Roskilde Festival is the largest North European culture and music festival and has existed since 1971. They are a non-profit organisation consisting of about 50 full-time employees and thousands of volunteers. It is held in Roskilde, Denmark in late June.

It is also famous for the Roskilde Festival Radio Nøgenløb (Naked Run) held on the Saturday of the Festival (this Saturday just past). The Nøgenløb is a foot race around the Festival grounds where the participants, men and women, run totally naked (shoes are allowed). It has been run every year since 1999, with a ticket to the next year’s festival awarded to the male and female winner.

The Danes obviously don’t have the phobia of public nudity common in the U. S. and some other countries.

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

The Roskilde Festival Radio Nøgenløb serves as an example of what a pack of Zs might look like as they run naked across the countryside.*

WARNING THE IMAGE BELOW LINKS TO A VIDEO THAT SHOWS NAKED MEN AND WOMEN RUNNING IN THE NØGENLØB. IF YOU ARE OFFENDED OR ASHAMED OF THE NAKED HUMAN FORM, DO NOT CLICK THE IMAGE BELOW.

Ammonia … Ammonia …

The internet is amazing. Mrs and I were talking on the phone with Pegasuspilot about the best way to clean earrings. Pp mentioned ammonia, and then recalled an old cartoon we saw as kids. Pp and I have been friends since before(?) elementary school. I saw him for the first time in 27 years when Mrs and I drove back home last month to see her mother. Pp and I got on as if time had never passed. Today he forwarded the following:

‘So, Veronica…’
‘So, David… Do you know anyone called Veronica Crush?’
‘Er… no, I don’t think so, why do you ask?’
‘Oh, someone mentioned that you knew her…’
‘Oh? No, you are the only Veronica that I know…’
‘Only this person said…’
‘Which person?’
‘Simon Doom, he’s a poet. Do you know him?’
‘No, I don’t. I don’t know any poets, I don’t move in those circles…’
‘But Simon said that you…’
‘So, Veronica, what have you got to say about this drawing I’ve retrieved from my archives for you to see?’
‘I think he was a bit drunk, so he might have been confused… Oh, right then, is it pencil David?’
‘Yes, mostly… and some charcoal.’

Koyaanisqatsi

20130908-025309.jpg
Koyaanisqatsi is perhaps the second greatest film of all time behind 2001 A Space Odyssey.

From Wikipedia – Koyaanisqatsi

Koyaanisqatsi English pronunciation: /koʊjɑːnɪsˈkɑːtsiː/[1] also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke.

The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse footage of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. Reggio explains the lack of dialogue by stating “it’s not for lack of love of the language that these films have no words. It’s because, from my point of view, our language is in a state of vast humiliation. It no longer describes the world in which we live.”In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means “unbalanced life”. […] film was out of print for most of the 1990s.

Watching this film in one sitting will leave you physically and emotionally twitching. It is a visual and auditory roller coaster ride. The imagery is stunning and breathtaking. The music haunting and compelling.

If you have never seen Koyaanisqatsi you must see it. If have seen it, you should watch it again. It is available from iTunes, Amazon, and other usual locations. I own both 2001 A Space Odyssey and Koyaanisqatsi on both DVD and digital iTunes format.
