Doesn’t look like much in the basket, but I individually wrapped most of the oranges and tangerines and left space for additional padding to be added at the shipping facility.

With padding … felt, bubble wrap, paper … it filled out a good sized box.

It is supposed to arrive Monday by 10 AM.

Four Horsemen

Today’s Four Horsemen

  • socially organised violence
  • debt,
  • iniquity
  • poverty

From Rotten Tomatoes

The Four Horseman is a independent cinematic feature documentary which lifts the lid on how the global economy really works. Living in the age of consequence unfettered growth and profit seeking have pushed humanity to the brink. Today’s Four Horsemen – socially organised violence, debt, iniquity and poverty control all of our lives. They’re gathering momentum, decimating communities and compromising future generations if they are not arrested the planet will gallop to a logical conclusion.

Interview with Roy Sebag

October 2015 interview with Roy Sebag Founder of BitGold and CEO of GoldMoney

This is a one hour interview with the founder of BitGold. Roy Sebag is a smart, knowledgable, articulate dude.

Regardless of your current feelings about gold, if you work and want to safeguard the value of your earnings you owe it to yourself to watch (listen really) to this video. Roy talks about concepts of money, value, investments, and of course … the BitGold platform.

No hype. No scare tactics. Just information.

I hope you find it interesting.

PS   I was just notified that this was my 1,000th post 😎

Roy and Josh

http://youtu.be/b0QMQwRx1q8

BitGold is the modern day embodiment of the global internet data/gold crypt envisioned in Neal Stepenson’s Cryptonomicon. While “reading” the Cryptonomicon last August (the first time) I began searching the Internet for digital gold solutions. I discovered several failed platforms … and BitGold. Coincidentally, BitGold had just announced entry into the US market.

YouTube and the Internet are awash with bombastic exhortations for and against the ownership of gold, fraught with dire predictions of the collapse of the US dollar and collapse of the global monetary system. Roy and Josh are above all that. Yes, they do point out the limitations of fiat money systems and yes, they do remind us that gold maintains its value literally forever, but they are calm, low key, and well reasoned. In coming posts, I will share those videos and other links that I find most interesting or useful. If you are interested, you can of course do your own research starting at BitGold.com.

Elon Explains

… some of the background for last nights successful Falcon 9 landing

A lot about how things work in space is counter-intuitive, as all of our intuition is gained from daily experiences where the air is thick, gravity doesn’t seem to change and movement is relatively slow. We do see lots of movies about space, but, unless you’re watching an IMAX documentary, they vary from slightly wrong, like The Martian (good movie!), to mostly absurdly wrong, like Red Planet (don’t watch this, it will hurt your brain), which also doesn’t help intuition.

• • •

In the case of the Falcon 9 rocket, the boost stage is able to accelerate a payload mass of 125 metric tons to 8000 km/h and land on an ocean platform or to 5000 km/h and land back at the launch site. The second one is lower because the rocket is moving super fast away from the launch site, so it has to do a screetching U-turn with nitrogen attitude thrusters, then fire the engines to create a reversed ballistic arc, then reorient again for atmospheric entry and have the engines pointed in the right direction for the landing burn. Since the propellant is liquid, it wants to centrifuge out during these maneuvers, so there has to be a system of baffles and internal holding tanks to keep it in place. It also needs three axis control surfaces that don’t melt easily and work well from hypersonic through subsonic speeds.

For a sea platform landing, the Falcon 9 figure of merit is therefore roughly 300 gigajoules (GJ) of kinetic energy and for a return to launch site landing, the number is about 120 GJ. These are fairly sizable by terrestrial standards. To put it into perspective, the city of San Francisco uses about 1 GJ per second of electricity, so the Falcon 9 booster transfers enough energy to power a city of almost a million people for five minutes.

INFERNO! Fire at the Cocoanut Grove

Last month on the 73rd anniversary of the Coconut Grove fire I reblogged a post about my mom, Goody Goodelle, who saw the fire start and with clear thinking was one of the very few people to get out alive. In the comments section of the original post, James Prince of The Core Theater in Richardson, TX (near Dallas) reached out to me for more information on Goody.

The Core Theatre is taking “Inferno! Fire at the Cocoanut Grove” to Boston. They need your help to get there. More information is available on their Go Fund Me page. Be sure to watch the video.

So I contacted my sister and in an even stranger turn of events she replied

“So, I saw that his theatre is in Richardson, TX. That’s where Jan’s niece, Susan, and her family live. So I sent Susan an FB message and asked if she’d heard of his theater. She tells me he goes to her church and she knows him and that he is very talented. As Susan said in her message back to me . . . mind blown. I will keep you posted.”

I don’t ask for much (OK I ask for a lot at least as far as the Mrs is concerned), but please take a look at the Go Fund Me page and contribute what you can if you find value in the project.

Thanks,

cb

iOS 9 Keyboard

When iOS 9 came out for iPad and iPhone, the default appearance of the keyboard changed. The Mrs is visually challenged and did not like the new look of the keyboard. She wanted the old one back. The difference is that the old keyboard displayed CAPITAL LETTERS all of the time. The new one displays either lowercase or UPPERCASE depending on whether or not the shift key was depressed.

Although not obvious it is possible to revert to the old keyboard default as follows:

Scalzi | Paris

John Scalzi has summed this up better and more eloquently than I could ever hope to.

I have many thoughts on the Paris attacks but the one I want to point out today is this: there are 1.2 billion Muslims in the world and what most of them want to do is live their lives, love their family, friends and neighbors, and be at peace with themselves, their world and their God.

The Muslims I know, and I know more than just a few, are as horrified as anyone by ISIS and what they represent. The Muslims I know are good people, and I am proud if and when they consider me to be their friend. I don’t experience what they feel when events like this happen, which give bigots here, where we live, an excuse to hate and demonize them. But I can see the impact from the outside. It’s stupid what is done to them, and it’s wrong.

The WAR on SCIENCE

We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology.
Carl Sagan

Perhaps society has always been at war with science. Science challenges belief systems. Science threatens the status quo. Scientific thinking requires one to question everything.

However scientific thought does not grant one the ability to throw out centuries of hard-won knowledge just because the doubter does not “believe” it. The Internet is chock full of blogs decrying the “lies” perpetuated by scientists, NASA, the media, the government. It is truly ironic that the science and technology that made computers, smart phones, tablets, and the Internet possible is the very science under attack on the Internet. So much of the “information” on the Internet is opinion and belief offered up as fact. The Internet gives everyone an equal voice.

Instead of making us smarter, the Internet is making us dumber. Our knowledge is based on “factoids” and “sound bites”. Few people bother to dig deeper. TL;DR

Sadly, I ran across this video on one of those “anti-science”, “we have been lied to” blogs. The author comments:

This is just such a great example of how sometimes the propaganda gets so heavy in it’s shaming tactics that it only serves to show how desperate and panicky the official side is seemingly becoming.

Science = propaganda

Homeless Guests Welcome At Tabrizi’s Restaurant For One Week

Now that’s what I’m talkin’ ’bout …

The Feels's avatarThe Feels

Last week, Michael Tabrizi, the owner of Tabrizi’s, a catering venue and restaurant in the Harborview residences, asked for volunteers to help him organize a “Homeless Restaurant Week.”

Tabrizi hopes to serve anywhere from 900 to 1,000 homeless guests at his restaurant during the week of July 20. And now, Tabrizi says, he has more volunteers than he needs, and his staff is “refusing to get paid” for that week.

“I don’t want to turn volunteers away,” Tabrizi said. Instead of helping to prepare or serve meals, volunteers will be invited to sit down with homeless guests over a dinner of chicken Cordon Bleu in sage cream sauce, spring salad, sparking apple cider and ice-cream waffle cone.

Tabrizi said his homeless restaurant week came after a brief encounter with a homeless person, to whom he gave his a few dollars and his business card, with an invitation to come see him…

OCTOMORE 06.3

From: http://www.bruichladdich.com/the-whisky/octomore/063-258-ppm

OCTOMORE
06.3/ 258 PPM
ISLAY BARLEY 2009
64% ABV

FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME WE ARE PROUD TO RELEASE OCTOMORE WHISKY DISTILLED FROM 100% ISLAY BARLEY AND HARVESTED IN 2008 BY FARMER JAMES BROWN AT LORGBA, A SINGLE FIELD ON HIS OCTOMORE FARM.

Peated to a stratospheric 258ppm, the highest ever released in the industry, this extraordinary dram embodies its island origins and carries its phenol count with an effortless grace.

High on the hill above Loch Indaal, Octomore faces the rage of Atlantic weather systems and once housed its own farm distillery, most likely producing a very heavily peated spirit from home-grown barley.

In homage to its origins, this is Octomore of Octomore.

TASTING NOTES

Character
Mesmerising in its potency – with perfect balance. The texture is like warm honey, the taste rich with a depth of character that can only be found on Islay.

Colour
Autumn sunshine – citrine.

Nose
It opens with the call of the sea, the thundering west coast waves driving a gentle mist onto the moorland and tempting the wild plants to release their unique aromas. Notes of myrtle, meadowsweet, mint and heather flowers drift across the nose. Wild thyme and red clover dance in perfect harmony with the strong uplifting peatiness of the Islay grown barley. It’s exhilarating, and seriously dramatic.

Palate
When the heat of the peat fires cool there is a spontaneous detonation of soft red grapes, cherries, Russian toffee, bitter chocolate, maple syrup and mellow oak. It is a taste like no other, a whisky cut loose, unhindered, unchanged. This is sorcery.

Finish
Long and strong, it warms the soul and lifts the heart. It evokes memories of those early years when the sweat of men instilled the spirit with a unique character. Join us as we look to the past, celebrating our Islay DNA while journeying into the future in a never-ending quest for the rainbow’s end.

Mood
The flavours just keep evolving to the point where it is driving you crazy with joy and you just want to tell the world what is happening. Relax and keep it to yourself – it’s not for sharing and when the glass is empty you will feel like the ultimate warrior.

DISCLAIMER – cb is not in anyway affiliated with Extreme Fliers or the INDIEGOGO campaign.

He just thinks it is a really cool concept at a great price. Model 3.0 builds on the expertise developed with Micro Drone and Micro Drone 2.0. If you have been wanting an affordable high quality toy quadcopter, this is your chance.

DISCAIMERER – cb has never actually touched, held, or flown the Micro Drone. But he has watched the videos and read the reviews.

DISCLAIMEREST – Whilst YouTube has hundreds of really cool drone videos, it is also full of videos of drone owners behaving badly and others reacting equally badly. Fly responsibly.

PS – cb finds that talking about himself in the third person is kind of weird.

Micro Drone 3.0 | 5 Days Remaining

Several posts ago I covered the Extreme Fliers’ Indiegogo campaign for the new Micro Drone 3.0. Amazingly, over 20 thousand people have now pre-ordered over $2 million USD worth of Micro Drone 3.0  kits and accessories. Only five days remain to contribute and claim your perk (that is pre-order) at a significantly reduced price. I am personally amazed at the number of pre-orders and speed at which the $75,000 USD goal was reached and surpassed. Wow. These are just the pre-orders. The product won’t officially go into retail distribution until November – December of this year. Just in time for Christmas.

I am unapologetically pro-science and pro-technology. I am also a futurist as my blog postings show.

However science, technology, and futurism should not and must not equate to the destruction of culture and tradition of any peoples. The current wave of protests against the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on the summit of Mauna Kea, while news to me, is an ongoing clash between the culture and traditions of native peoples and the interests of outsiders.

I have no opinions on the current protests, but this post is a good starting place to learn more.

by Bryan Kamaoli Kuwada

“Hawaiians need to stop living in the past.” We’ve all heard this before, and we’re probably going to hear it a lot in the coming days. Brave people are getting arrested up on our sacred mountain right now in frigid temperatures (there was even a blizzard there a couple of weeks back), continuing a years-long fight and engaging in a blockade to prevent the further cultural and environmental desecration of the very piko, the umbilicus, the center of our islands by the Thirty Meter Telescope. I attended an overnight vigil a few nights ago on our island to show support for these koa on theirs, and we got an update via phone from Kahoʻokahi Kanuha and Lanakila Mangauil, two of the humble young leaders of the blockade. SpaceX | CRS-7 Investigation Update

Via email

CRS-7 Investigation Update

On June 28, 2015, following a nominal liftoff, Falcon 9 experienced an overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank approximately 139 seconds into flight, resulting in loss of mission. This summary represents an initial assessment, but further investigation may reveal more over time.

Prior to the mishap, the first stage of the vehicle, including all nine Merlin 1D engines, operated nominally; the first stage actually continued to power through the overpressure event on the second stage for several seconds following the mishap. In addition, the Dragon spacecraft not only survived the second stage event, but also continued to communicate until the vehicle dropped below the horizon and out of range.

SpaceX has led the investigation efforts with oversight from the FAA and participation from NASA and the U.S. Air Force. Review of the flight data proved challenging both because of the volume of data —over 3,000 telemetry channels as well as video and physical debris—and because the key events happened very quickly.

From the first indication of an issue to loss of all telemetry was just 0.893 seconds. Over the last few weeks, engineering teams have spent thousands of hours going through the painstaking process of matching up data across rocket systems down to the millisecond to understand that final 0.893 seconds prior to loss of telemetry.

At this time, the investigation remains ongoing, as SpaceX and the investigation team continue analyzing significant amounts of data and conducting additional testing that must be completed in order to fully validate these conclusions. However, given the currently available data, we believe we have identified a potential cause.

Preliminary analysis suggests the overpressure event in the upper stage liquid oxygen tank was initiated by a flawed piece of support hardware (a “strut”) inside the second stage. Several hundred struts fly on every Falcon 9 vehicle, with a cumulative flight history of several thousand. The strut that we believe failed was designed and material certified to handle 10,000 lbs of force, but failed at 2,000 lbs, a five-fold difference. Detailed close-out photos of stage construction show no visible flaws or damage of any kind.

In the case of the CRS-7 mission, it appears that one of these supporting pieces inside the second stage failed approximately 138 seconds into flight. The pressurization system itself was performing nominally, but with the failure of this strut, the helium system integrity was breached. This caused a high pressure event inside the second stage within less than one second and the stage was no longer able to maintain its structural integrity.

Despite the fact that these struts have been used on all previous Falcon 9 flights and are certified to withstand well beyond the expected loads during flight, SpaceX will no longer use these particular struts for flight applications. In addition, SpaceX will implement additional hardware quality audits throughout the vehicle to further ensure all parts received perform as expected per their certification documentation.
As noted above, these conclusions are preliminary. Our investigation is ongoing until we exonerate all other aspects of the vehicle, but at this time, we expect to return to flight this fall and fly all the customers we intended to fly in 2015 by end of year.

While the CRS-7 loss is regrettable, this review process invariably will, in the end, yield a safer and more reliable launch vehicle for all of our customers, including NASA, the United States Air Force, and commercial purchasers of launch services. Critically, the vehicle will be even safer as we begin to carry U.S. astronauts to the International Space Station in 2017.

Ice on Mars: Mars has belts of glaciers consisting of frozen water

Date:  April 8, 2015

Source:  University of Copenhagen – Niels Bohr Institute

Summary:

Mars has distinct polar ice caps, but Mars also has belts of glaciers at its central latitudes in both the southern and northern hemispheres. A thick layer of dust covers the glaciers, so they appear as surface of the ground, but radar measurements show that underneath the dust there are glaciers composed of frozen water. New studies have now calculated the size of the glaciers and thus the amount of water in the glaciers.

“We have calculated that the ice in the glaciers is equivalent to over 150 billion cubic meters of ice — that much ice could cover the entire surface of Mars with 1.1 meters of ice. The ice at the mid-latitudes is therefore an important part of Mars’ water reservoir,” explains Nanna Bjørnholt Karlsson.
